status-completed Please see the post update. Great, thanks for putting up the new design and the effort required to achieve it. Two nitpicks: The recent votes appear like this: This appear like a red mustache (my imagination runs wild, sometimes). Your votes don't stand out. As shown here: Unless you have seen the two (which many will), you may not ...

Comments on June 21st Edit: You're going to hate me, but I actually think the updated design looks more like a constellation. For example, Taurus: Image source Especially with the symbols that were unique to aviation (VORTAC and airport) removed, there's really nothing about it that strikes me as aviation-related. If I had to pick between the old and the ...

I'd be in favor of reversing the colors (make "unselected" arrows dark & "selected" ones light) - I think that would make the difference more intuitive and the unvoted arrows less obtrusive - probably with the least work :)

EDIT 2: Another design concept. The "Questions", "Tags" buttons are re-made for a more simplistic style and less sim-like. The selected tab is in green, as is the selected state of many cockpit buttons. IFR chart laid very faintly on the white background. It is neater than my previous example, and it is more generic as well (my previous one emphasizes too ...

As the author of the work, I can offer a harsh (although biased) opinion on the matter. The piece speaks to me, in that the singular turbine, whilst inhibiting flight, can both continue to fly, progressing through issues as Aviation.SE does. Similarly, I feel as though the "Kneawwww" text also contributes to one of the main aspects of the site: free speech ...

100% agree, the blue is definitely too bright

Further on falstro's comment about the chart, I've come up with a more realistic version. I mostly keep the nodes in their original positions, I replaced them with something more assembling an approach chart: The color scheme here certainly needs tuning (maybe fade the chart like 50% transparency into the background). EDIT: I've combined this with my other ...

I agree with this complaint! At first glance, would you say that I upvoted or downvoted the question below? When I visited the site the first time after the redesign, I thought: "Why did I downvote such a good question?" On Stack Exchange sites, the more brightly coloured arrow is the one what was selected. (When you press the flight attendant call ...

Looks good, I approve.

I think that on the 4th of July, the Aviation.SE airplane should crash into the Arqade mothership. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PirVtiJuvDs

Awesome, looks real good. I like the logo idea of combining the AI with wings. The badge-icons is an obvious slam dunk. :) One thing I noticed regarding the background, and I might be alone in this, so I'm just leaving it here to see if others see it the same way. When I look at the background, I see star constellations rather than an enroute chart. Also ...

The icon's shape in hot questions list doesn't look very distinct. Perhaps you could add those transparent lines to it? They're used in favicon which is smaller, so why not there too? Compare: With lines: Update Icon was changed and now looks like this: I'm not a professional designer but I gotta say there are noticeable differences between each site's ...

Thanks for the fantastic work here, especially the logo. The attitude indicator part also looks like a runway stretching out to the horizon ahead of the aircraft, which is really great! But I do agree with other comments about the background. At first glance I thought "constellation", not "chart". In fact, if you removed the two IFR VOR symbols there would ...

The blue in the arrow seems to be a match to (most of) the blue triangles in the map, as well as the Ask Question button and the section highlight line. I tried desaturating them to match (the other, lighter) blue triangles in the map. The difference is pretty subtle (at least on my monitor): I prefer the darker arrow because the lighter one looks "washed ...

Can the background image be moved / rotated so that the waypoints are shown more? Right now, only a small portion is shown and most of the area is empty space.

How about departure and arrival signs? Source

Ooh, I have a slack day and get to come back and we have design stuff! Awesome! Now I get to drive Stéphane crazy with ideas :) The Logo I like the general logo concept, particularly carrying the horizontal bar through the wings: It has a pleasing minimalist aesthetic to it, and as mins pointed out it follows along the same lines as other aviation-related ...

Following up with the issue about the FavIcon not being recognizable enough (and even looking like a "Chinese Character", I'm attaching my re-interpretation of it for consideration:

2

Not sure if it will work, but how about making the sky part in the icon less opaque? Hopefully it will look a little less like piecharts.stackexchange.com that way.

2

I may be a little picky, but the favicon looks like a Chinese word character especially with the red background. And looking in the "Hot Questions" list, the favicon seriously looks like some Asian thing.

status-completed Please see the post update. The blue text, IMO, is far too bright The up/downvote buttons are downright confusing - the selected button shouldn't be duller than the un-selected one!

Since there's talk about color, don't forget magenta, it's used heavily in aviation. Magenta is used in cockpit instrumentation to highlight the route (desired path) for example. If magenta doesn't work out, the way it is right now is very nice. It contrasts nicely with the background.

How about attitude indicators indicating nose up or nose down? This would be very not arrow-y, but I think it would be cool. A profile view showing a climbing or descending aircraft would be neat. I'm also interested in seeing some GA design element on the site.

Here's a perhaps somewhat nicer CSS tweak, based on the front page style: .statscontainer .answered-accepted strong { border-radius: 50%; color: #FFF; background-color: #15B58A; width: 36px; height: 36px; line-height: 36px; margin: -10px auto 0 auto; } Here's what it looks like: (And yes, this is going into the next version of ...

Blue color is too vivid Basically, the same problem as this one. On the "new" theme, the color of text is #0492fd. On the original theme it is #127fd1.

Long question titles don't word-wrap properly Have a look: That's supposed to be "careless or reckless", not "ca reless or reckless". That's this question of mine. I doubt it matters, but just in case it does, that's with a collapsed/hidden sidebar. Firefox 60.3.0 ESR. This seems to be a general problem; Worldbuilding has the same issue, as you can see:...

In the meantime you can put something like this in your browser style sheet: @-moz-document domain("aviation.stackexchange.com") { div.answered-accepted { background-color: palegoldenrod !important } } I use Stylus extension but you may enter it directly in the browser styles.
